This is my take on it. In my experience, we have to do something. It really could be anything as long as a decent effort was made to make it personal. Something should be planned especially if your lady does the female jedi mind trick of "you don't have to do/get anything". This is a trap/test. *insert Star Wars meme here*

Think of it this way. She says "don't" do anything and you do something. There are two types of reactions she can have after recieving what ever it is you plan for her. First, she'll act all surprised and happy while quietly saying "victory" in her head. Or second, she'll act surprised and possibly embrassed, but she'll also be silently pleased that you ignored her and did something anyway.

It's a win-win either way. So if you care about her, participate in Valentine's Day for her sake unless you want to possibly spend the next one without her. :/

You know I honestly can't remember at what point I would start saying hello with the kiss. Of the three real dating relationships I've had, the last two only went on for a week or less before the sex started. Probably why the didn't last, but anywho. I would agree with the sex logic.

dude... that's awesome. i recommend to everybody i know to move to LA. of course, the last thing LA needs is more people, but it is so unbelievably cool here. weather, people, technology, it really is all that and a bag of rice. that doesn't come at a price, and yeah, it's kinda expensive. but i came from Chicago and it's very comparable to that.

The photo shoot was SUPER COOL and I will always love those pictures, but I'm ready to release what they signified for me at the time.... a very, very, dark place.

One time, many years ago, I was on a personal journey of my own. during which I was struck by a nugget of wisdom from the movie City Slickers. Long story short, cowboys have to know how to do everything at anytime yet they seem to be the most relaxed people you see. Need a campfire, they can do it. Need to shoe a horse, they can do it. Need to fix the wagon wheel, they can do it. Need to skin a badger, they can do it. the reason they are so calm? they actually know just one thing. that thing is, they can do it.

time does heal all wounds. thank you for having the strength to share. on a completely unrelated note, the photo shoot actually looks cool!

for me, valentines day celebrates the love story. having lived a few love stories of my own, i feel it's still very appropriate to celebrate. because, you can kick the boy out of the romance, but you can't take the romance out of the boy.

It is very material, Mark--I agree. That is why, even though I like presents, it is really hard for me to take V-day seriously. Mechanical is a very good way to describe how it looks when all these dudes are searching for what is probably the only bouquet of flowers they buy all year long. That's too bad, it really is. I would like my hubs to do something, but I don't care very much what it is. The fact is, I already know he's been thinking of it, so it's like--half-way there!! We are not super romantic as people, anyway. We are tentatively hoping to celebrate our 1st anniversary by going to a daniel tosh show. VERY ROMANTIC of us, right? But, hot damn, I love that man. And the way I feel when, just before bed, he hugs me and whispers "you're my favorite person in the whole world," and then turns over and starts snoring...that's not anything any flowers or a dinner out has ever even come close to.
Don't be sad about valentine's day--look at it as an opportunity to celebrate love, just love for anyone--like your nephew. Like my mom did. Having her as a valentine is still meaningful to me. When we were kids EVERYBODY got a valentine. Everyone. I'd love to see that come back. In fact, I am planning on something like that in my office. Everyone should get to be someone's valentine for a day--why not?
